Argon isotope background dark matter. The ardm experiment operates a ton scale. Several large dark matter detectors based on liquid argon have been proposed including deap miniclean warp and dark side. In this concentration gradient the heavier isotopes accumulate at the bottom end of the column and the lighter isotopes at the top.

These nuclear recoils produce ionised and excited argon atoms which after a series of reactions form short lived argon dimers weakly bonded molecules that decay and emit scintillation light.
